“Free Solo” Wins BAFTA for Best Documentary

On Sunday, February 10, Free Solo won the award for Best Documentary at the 72nd Annual British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs). The National Geographic documentary features professional climber Alex Honnold and his 2017 free solo ascent and the first-ever successful free solo completion of the Freerider climbing route on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.

Free Solo premiered on September 28, 2018, to rave reviews and this month became the second-highest grossing documentary of 2018, generating over $18 million. It also earned an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary for co-producers and directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. The Oscars will take place Sunday, February 24.
