Nicole Page Quoted in Realscreen Mag Discussing User-Generated Content

In the latest issue of Realscreen Magazine, RPJ Partner Nicole Page was interviewed on the proliferation of user-generated content (UGC) in documentary film and television today, and more specifically, the issues around its use and licensing. In the article, “When UGC Becomes ‘WTF?’,” Daniele Alcinii details recent copyright litigation arising out of the use of uncleared UGC in the 2019 Netflix documentary Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened. The article explains the necessity of taking proper steps to secure rights and clearances for UGC, a sentiment echoed by Ms. Page. Specifically, Page stressed the importance of pre-publication review, which entails going through footage frame by frame to ensure everything on screen, including all UGC, is properly cleared. Failure to do this, explains Page, could result in infringement claims against the producer.

Page heads up the firm’s entertainment group and frequently counsels production companies on rights and clearance issues in documentary filmmaking.
