“Free Solo,” Starring RPJ Client Alex Honnold, Wins at 2020 Rockie Awards

The Banff World Media Festival’s 2020 Rockie Awards moved online this year due to the continuing Covid-19 pandemic and were broadcasted by virtual live stream on Monday, June 15. The awards celebrate excellence in film, television and digital media content from around the world, with a jury panel of 150 international professionals in the industry. This year, the documentary film Free Solo, featuring our firm’s client, professional rock climber Alex Honnold, was given the top award in the Documentary & Factual category for History and Biography.

Produced and directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, Free Solo follows Honnold’s 2017 free solo ascent of the Freerider climbing route on the El Capitan granite face in Yosemite National Park. In 2019, the film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and the Best Documentary Award at the BAFTAs (the UK Oscars), along with all seven Creative Arts Emmy Awards categories it was nominated in.
