Centered: Lieberman – A Black Eye Productions Documentary on Bipartisanship and Political Integrity

Congratulations to RPJ client Black Eye Productions on the World Premiere of its feature documentary, Centered: Joe Lieberman.  The film traces the political career of the founder of the centrist “No Labels” political party, former U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman, representing Connecticut from 1989 to 2013.  Born during WWII, Lieberman emerged as a political figure known for his willingness to transcend partisan boundaries, carving out a legacy as a Democrat who wasn’t afraid to work across party lines.

In 2000, Lieberman made history when he ran alongside Al Gore as the first Jewish vice-presidential candidate, a symbol of the Democrats’ efforts to appeal to a broad range of voters, including moderates and independents.  Though the Gore-Lieberman ticket ultimately lost to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, Lieberman’s bipartisan outlook continued to shape his political identity in the years that followed.

Throughout his Senate tenure, Lieberman worked closely with Republicans like John McCain and Lindsey Graham on critical national security and defense issues.  A strong proponent of fiscal responsibility, he often sought common ground with Republicans on budgetary matters, including deficit reduction—positions that made him a prominent voice of moderation during a time when partisanship was on the rise.

“No Labels” was founded in 2010 with the mission of supporting centrism and bipartisanship through what it calls the “commonsense majority.”  After retiring from the Senate in 2013, Lieberman continued to lead the party and champion the cause of bipartisanship, frequently speaking out against the growing partisan gridlock and ideological polarization that has come to define much of modern American politics and played out in the Election this week.

Lieberman’s career serves as a powerful reminder that one can remain a dedicated member of a political party while still seeking collaboration and compromise with those across the aisle.  Over his 24-year Senate career, he demonstrated that effective governance often requires stepping beyond the constraints of party loyalty to pursue the common good.  His legacy endures as a testament to the potential for cross-party collaboration to produce meaningful, lasting solutions for the nation.

Congratulations again to Black Eye Productions on this wonderful documentary, and to our RPJ team Heidi Reavis, Dan Ain and Katie Bigley who provided production legal advice on the film!

Centered: Joe Lieberman will be running at the Edlavitch Jewish Community Center in Washington, DC, from November 17-21.  Get tickets to the film here.  Read more about the film here and here.
